Three layouts, three ways of paying bills

  • Monthly checklist: one sheet per month, with columns for how you paid, the date and a confirmation number. Good for anyone who pays bills by hand and wants a paper trail if a payment goes missing.
  • Year grid: every bill down the side and twelve months across. When the sheet is filled with your bills, boxes only appear in the months a bill is due, so quarterly and yearly bills don't get lost.
  • Paycheck split: bills grouped under each payday with a "left over" line. It pairs with the budget by paycheck planner.

Paper only tells you what's paid. To see what your balance will be on each due date, use the online bill tracker or the cash flow forecast, both built from the same bills. Prefer a filled-in yearly grid you can tick off on screen? Use the monthly bill tracker.

Using the spreadsheet version

In Google Sheets, go to File → Import → Upload and choose the CSV. In Excel, open the file directly. The amount column ends with a SUM formula, so the total updates as you type. Tip: freeze the first row (View → Freeze) so the column names stay visible while you scroll.

Questions people ask

What should a bill tracker template include?

The essentials are the bill name, amount, due date and a paid checkbox. The columns that make it useful in practice are how the bill is paid (autopay, online, check), the date you actually paid, and a confirmation number, so you can prove a payment if a biller says it never arrived.

Is there a free printable bill tracker?

Yes, this page. Choose a layout, the number of rows and your paper size, then press Print or save it as a PDF from the print dialog. Nothing to sign up for and no email gate.

Can I use this bill tracker template in Google Sheets or Excel?

Press "Download spreadsheet (CSV)". Open it in Google Sheets (File → Import) or Excel. The total row uses a SUM formula, so it updates as you fill in amounts.

Which layout should I pick?

Year grid if you want one sheet for the whole year with a box per month. Monthly checklist if you like to record the date paid and a confirmation number. Paycheck split if you budget by paycheck and want bills grouped under each payday.

Can the template be filled with my own bills?

Yes. Turn on "Fill with my saved bills" and the bills from your BillRiver tracker are printed in, with amounts and due days. Leave it off for a blank template to fill by hand.
