Budget by paycheck

Each paycheck gets its own short list: the bills it has to cover before the next payday, and what's left for everything else. Uses the bills and income from your tracker.

Paid every two weeks? That's 26 paychecks a year, not 24. Set your first payday of the year and the months with a third check light up.

How to budget paycheck to paycheck

A monthly budget assumes all your income arrives on the 1st. For most people it doesn't: it comes every Friday, every other Friday or on the 1st and 15th, and bills are scattered across the month. Budgeting by paycheck matches the plan to how money actually arrives.

  1. Line up paydays and due dates. The planner above assigns each bill to the latest paycheck that lands on or before its due date.
  2. Read the leftover. That number has to cover groceries, fuel and everything without a due date until the next check. If one check is left with far less than the others, that's the one to rebalance.
  3. Rebalance with due dates, not willpower. Moving one large bill from a heavy paycheck to a light one evens out the month without cutting anything.
  4. Give third paychecks a job before they arrive: an emergency fund, a debt, or the sinking funds for annual bills.

Enter pay as take-home, the amount that actually reaches your account after taxes and deductions. If a raise ever landed on your paycheck smaller than you expected, a narrated explainer on how US tax brackets work shows exactly where the difference went.

Questions people ask

What does budgeting by paycheck mean?

Instead of one monthly budget, you plan each paycheck separately: list the bills due before the next payday, pay them from this check, and give whatever is left a job (groceries, gas, savings). It suits anyone paid weekly or biweekly whose bills do not line up with paydays.

Which paycheck should pay which bill?

The usual rule, and the one this planner uses, is: each bill is paid from the most recent paycheck on or before its due date. Bills due before your first listed payday are flagged, because they need money already in the account.

How do I budget paycheck to paycheck when one check is short?

Look at the leftover column. If one paycheck is carrying far more than the other, ask the biggest biller in that window to move your due date a week later; most utilities, card issuers and many landlords will.

What should I do with a third paycheck?

Because your bills are already covered by two paychecks a month, a third check is unassigned. Common uses: top up the emergency fund, pay ahead on debt, or fund sinking funds for annual bills.
